ACHIEVEMENTS OF SINGAPORE

Since her independence in 1965, Singapore has gone through many changes and progressed from an ex-British colony to a city state that is known as one of the Four Asian Tigers (together with Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan) due to its highly developed economies. This came about as a result of her rapid industrialisation from the day of her independence till the 1990s. By the 21st century, Singapore has developed into a city state with an advance and high-income economy.

Here is a list of some things which Singapore has achieved since her independence:
  • It is one of the cleanest cities in the world.
  • It is a green city - greenery all over the city. Appropriately, it is also called a 'garden city'.
  • It's airport - Changi Airport - has been voted as the best airport in the world for the last 10 years.
  • It's airline - Singapore Airlines - has been voted as the best airline in the world for more than 14 years.
  • It's port is the busiest port in the world - handling about 19 million TEU's (Twenty Footer Equivalents) per Annum.
  • It's housing policy is among the best in the world as about 95% of citizens have their own home.  Furthermore, the houses are quite spacious, have all the amenities nearby, e.g., market, supermarkets, multi-stall eating centres, library, swimming pool, bus stop, car park, school, etc.
  • It has an excellent public transport system which comprised of buses, trains & taxis.
  • It's infrastructure is one of the best in the world. This includes the world's best airport, world's busiest port, a very efficient and highly successful telecommunication service.
  • It has an efficient water distribution system. There is clean water readily available to every home.
  • Almost all Singaporeans can speak English, which is a huge plus in today's business world.
  • It was awarded as the best city in Asia to do business in 1998, 1999.
  • It has also been voted as freest economy in the world.
Today, we also see many landmarks around Singapore that is a reflection of her progress and development:

1) SINGAPORE LANDMARKS

2) THE MARINA BARRAGE
An engineering marvel. A dam in Singapore built across the bay, between Marina East and Marina South. It is also Singapore’s fifteenth reservoir.

The Marina Barrage was conferred the Superior Achievement Award - the highest honour of the competition for the best project entry - at the AAEE Annual Awards Luncheon held in Washington, DC, USA on 6 May 2009. The Marina Barrage beat 33 other entries to take home the top prize in the year's competition organised by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE), becoming the second project outside of USA to win the award, in the last decade! [source: wikipedia]

However not all is well with the beautiful city state. With the reality of the worsening economy around the world, Singapore is also starting to feel the impact. The recent downgrading of the U.S. debt by Standard & Poor is believed to have some serious repercussions on Singapore’s economy in the days to come, as the city state has been very dependent on many foreign investments to keep her economy going. Being a country with very little natural resources, and a shortage of manpower, the Singapore government has been greatly dependent on attracting foreign human resources into the country. This has caused some discontent among the locals, and with the recent flooding in Orchard Road (something that has not happened since the 1970s), as well as other social issues, the country is beginning to feel the strain even more.

  5. Singapore is not experiencing its Golden age because the people are more worried about other social issues as a result the country is beginning to feel a strain. Thus , the people does not have time to innovate or invent in the science or the arts. The locals are also unhappy with the government attracting foreign human resources into the country.

I would not consider Singapore to be experiencing its Golden age as Singapore is not widespread peace and prosperity. Although Singapore has achieve great achievements since its independence , there were a lot more achievements during the Golden Age in any other times. Singapore is considered quite successful compared to many other countries. Recently there was a flood in Orchard Road. If Singapore was considered as a Golden Age then there should not have been such a problem.

Yes. With so many achievements, economy thriving, government respected, no riots, society happy, education is well. This is considered a golden age. Not only has Singapore been improving their society having more landmarks and improving lives, they have been maintaining their standards sibnce their independence of 1965 till now. Although Singapore has no natural resources, theyu are independent enough to have their own supply of water stopping the contract of loan of water from Malaysia in the near future. Singapore is a multi-racial country which respects all races and religions. having the "best award" in many things for many years in a row. Therefore concluding that Singapore is experiencing their Golden Age now.

I think that Singapore is not counted as experiencing the Golden Age. As Singapore's does not have financial problems and it always stays at the highest peak, it does not have any problem. Though, we are experiencing peace and does not have any fiancial problems yet we do not invent items as much as other countries like Japan, Korea etc. Thus, this makes me think that Singapore is not experiencing the Golden Age.

No, I would not consider Singapore to be experiencing its Golden Age now because even though it has many achievements, Singapore is starting to feel the impact of the recent downgrading of the U.S debt by Standard and Poor. They are starting to feel the impact because countries like us are usually dependant on U.S as we import goods from that country. Therefore, Singapore will then get affected and so will other countries who also import their goods from U.S.

  36. Golden age can only be observed from a historical perspective. Its presumptive to assume that what you are experiencing is the best decade for Singapore. Don't forget we are in the midst of a recession. For me the best decade is probably the 80s. Many classic tunes. Housing was cheap and many holiday destinations are still unspoilt. You can even get drive a car for $3000 or less. But even then, I won't consider it as a Golden Age unlike China Tang Dynasty Golden Age that lasted from 710-755 A.D.

Although it is the smallest country in the world, over the years, their achievements made are commendable. In Asia, it is known as one of the Four Asian Tigers alongside with South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Their architecture also was a reason for Singapore to be expriencing the Golden Age now. The Marina Barrage was one of Sinagpore's greatest inventions and won the top prize, beating 33 other countries. Thus, this shows that Singapore is indeed expriencing the Golden Age now.

Yes, I think that Singapore is experiencing it's golden age now. Singapore is still young therefore, we still have a lot more to achieve. Within this short period of 46 years we have achieved what a much bigger country can achieve too. We recently just built a Marina Bay Sands and I am proud to say that a lot of people are recognising that. A lot more of foreigners are coming to Singapore and staying there. Come to think of it Singapore have change a lot from a kampong to a city. Singapore has also cleaned our Singapore river, previously it was so dirty now is very clean. Hence, Singapore have a lot more to achieve as we are still a young nation.

I do not consider Singapore to be experiencing its Golden Age now.The economy is worsening around the world which is causing Singapore to go down-hill. Singapore depends on other countries to keep our economy going but since the recent downgrading of the U.S debt by standard and poor could cause us to have an economic crisis. This why the government is attracting more foreign workers to come and work in Singapore.Even though Singapore has achieved many things, i do not think that it is going through the Golden Age right now.

Yes .I would consider Singapore as experiencing Golden Age now.As The meaning of Golden Age is where there are little poverty and prosperation, and we would not need to worry abut basic things such as safety, food and shelter. Not only that as Singapore has a good team of governers who who takes charge of our safety hence we need not need to worry and during our free time we can think of new ideas to improve our basic needs. Although Singapore may not invent new ideas during their free time but we do excel in Engineering and Architecture. Singapore used to be a place where fisherman's trade but now Singapore has become a first world country,as there were new ideas being suggested hence we have become a more developed country.

  56. 1/7-02 ; No. Not all Singapore citizens have their own home to live. Sometimes, there are some economic downturns. Singapore has very little natural resources and shortages of manpower. Most of the workers are from foreign countries e.g Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. There were a few times of flooding in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  57. No, Singapore is not experiencing its Golden Age now. Many people in Singapore is not that happy in Singapore and with the world crisis, Singapore would be affected. When Singapore is affected by the world crisis, Singapore's economy will go down. Tourists will not be coming into Singapore as their country is also having economy crisis. The business in Singapore will also affect the economy due to natural disasters like flooding that took place in Orchard Road. The companies will be affected and this will lead to retrenchments as they are not able to pay their debts in the company. Without the money to invent more things, all business will slow down and again bringing the economy down. Therefore, due to the downturn in the economy, Singapore will not experience Golden Age.

Because other countries are being affected by economic downturn and soon it will affect us as no tourist and buissness man will come to singapore to do buissness. If people don't come and invest in singapore, the companies will also be affected by money problems and with that, the workers and staff would lose their job as companies will not have the money to pay for their salaries. The golden age will start to decline also.
